These are some of the most commonly asked questions we’ve been asked about lake and pond management:
Short answer: No, when done correctly.
Aquatic Control only applies EPA-registered herbicides at labeled rates, all of which are EPA approved for use in ponds and lakes containing fish. All applications are completed by the best trained and licensed applicators in the business.
That said, small ponds, especially in hot summer months, can be more sensitive due to naturally low dissolved oxygen levels. In higher-risk situations, we monitor oxygen levels and adjust treatment approaches to avoid stressing the fish population. Fish safety is always a top priority.
Usually, yes.
Most products we use have no swimming restrictions. If a restriction does apply, signage will be posted and additional notifications are available upon request. When restrictions are required, they are typically 24 hours or less.
We do ask that you avoid swimming during the actual application, both because stirring up sediment can reduce treatment effectiveness, and because, well… getting run over by our boat would really ruin your day.
Advanced notice of treatment dates is available upon request.
Yes.
There are no fish consumption restrictions associated with any of the products we apply when used according to the label.
Our treatment products do not restrict pets from drinking pond water.
However, if your pond is your pet’s primary water source, caution is advised, not because of our treatments, but due to the potential presence of algae toxins, E. coli, or other naturally occurring bacteria.
If this is a concern, Aquatic Control can arrange lab testing for algae toxins and E. coli to help you make an informed decision. (Your dog will still probably prefer the pond over their water bowl—but at least you’ll know what’s in it.)
It depends on the target and the product used:
In heavily infested ponds, treatments may be staged more gradually to prevent oxygen depletion. This is why starting early in the season leads to better, and safer, results.
Yes, there are several alternatives and supplemental options, including:
While chemical treatments are highly regulated, consistent, and often the most cost-effective long-term option, we’re happy to design a program that aligns with your preferences and goals. Many successful programs use a combination of approaches.
We get this question a lot.
Based on field testing, lab work, and available peer-reviewed research, we have not seen consistent, measurable benefits from bacterial additives in pond management. Bacteria already occur naturally in ponds and typically reach a natural carrying capacity.
At this time, there is no peer-reviewed scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness for improving pond water quality. We do carry some products that claim to improve water quality, but we will not guarantee their results!
No.
If you’re interested in our service programs, we’re happy to evaluate your pond and provide management options at no cost.

No. We do get charged a fee for credit card purchases, so we would prefer a bank draft, but understand that the credit card is convenient.
Usually, no. At proper stocking rates, grass carp are effective at controlling certain species of rooted vegetation and we do recommend them for some ponds. However, getting the right number can be difficult. Too many and they will stir up sediments and create a barren landscape that is not beneficial to your fish population. Not enough and the problem persists.
In addition, grass carp do not readily consume some of the biggest problem species like duckweed and filamentous algae but will consume some of your more beneficial plant species. Plant ID, lake size, goals, and your current fish population are all factors that need to be considered when purchasing grass carp.
No, we can complete service without you there. We try to work out the details of launch site, access, etc. during our initial inspection.
No, mosquitoes are not an issue in well managed ponds. They reproduce in small pools isolated pools as their larvae are highly susceptible to predation and wind action.
Your applicator can contact you however you wish-call, text, email, just let us know in advance and we will make it happen.
Yes, if requested, we can send reports however you desire. You just need to indicate whether you want an email, text, or call.
Yes, there could be occasions when the pond should not be treated. This may include low oxygen, planktonic algae blooms during hot summer days, poor access, or the pond may not need anything, which is sometimes the case when a pond is being actively managed.
This depends on the size of the pond and type of treatment that is being completed. Keep in mind, we are using the best and most efficient boats in the industry, so it may be quicker than you think. A typical maintenance treatment on a 1-acre pond may only take 10-15 minutes. However, if you have a weed problem, or if we are using backpacks, those treatments can take longer.
Yes, we are more than happy to walk you through this; however, many folks have gone down that road and find that it is easier, cheaper, and better to just hire our service division to do the work for you!
Probably not. We don’t strive to be the cheapest option. Managing lakes and ponds means managing complex ecosystems, and we believe that requires the best products, equipment, and people available.
Our goal is to provide the highest level of service at a fair and transparent price.
In today’s market, many competitors are now owned by private equity firms whose primary strategy is often to reduce costs and, in turn, service, while relying heavily on marketing. Also, be vigilant when looking at their contracts. Many times, there will be hidden expenses.
Aquatic Control remains a family-owned and operated company, and we take pride in delivering consistent, science-based solutions and the highest standard of service in the industry.
